1. Her Books are Magic
The first time I read Eleanor and Park it was like being in love for the first time. It was so vivid, so real. In some ways it was more real than first love, because time has dimmed those memories and feelings. But it was also so gritty, so horrible. It was like reading all of the worst things about being human. Somehow the two blend together to create something … special.
When Rainbow Rowell writes her characters leap off the page. They’re like your best friend, someone you’ve known your whole life, but you still get to go on the emotional adventure of getting to know them. Her stories tug on your heart strings, sometimes tug until they break. I don’t know how to explain it. I’m a reader, not a writer.
2. She’s Like, the Nicest Person Ever
Seriously, who else takes the time to like and re-tweet things their fans send them? EVERY SINGLE DAY? And she just goes into book stores and signs copies of her books. Her most recent short story, “Kindred Spirits,” is currently available in all eBook platforms, and they are donating 100% of the proceeds to the ACLU.
3. She is an Amazing Mom
Her twitter feed is loaded with exploits and conversations with her sons. I love that she is always encouraging them to think for themselves. She isn’t afraid to have the difficult conversations (or the different Harry Potter conversations.) And she encourages them to be themselves.
Yet despite all of that, her kids aren’t all over the internet. She has done a fantastic job of maintaining their privacy. Seriously, I challenge you, find a picture of her family. Someday those kids are going to really appreciate that their lives were painted all over the internet before they were too old to understand what that meant.
What kind of author loves fanfiction? Most authors kind of snub it, as if it isn’t real writing or something. Rainbow not only embraces it, she wrote an entire novel that’s basically a love story to fanfiction. THEN she wrote a full-length fic based on the made-up book from her novel. I mean, even if you don’t care for fanfiction yourself, you have to give her props for going that far down the meta-rabbit hole.
5. That Hair!
I am in love with Rainbow Rowell’s hair. It’s long, and curly, and huge, and kind of out of control. Good lord she is beautiful. She doesn’t have to be a super model to do it, she’s naturally beautiful.
