The Golden Compass

Okay, okay, so this book isn’t actually about witches. It’s about a girl named Lyra who discovers that kids in her hometown of Oxford are being abducted. Right around this time a mysterious (and totally creepy) woman comes and adopts Lyra and takes her into the high societies of London. Also, I should mention that all humans have daemons, an animal representation of their soul that they get to talk to and be with all the time. Super awesome! Seriously, guys, if you like fantasy give this book a go, it’s jam packed with steam-punk-y, fantasy, epic, religious elements that are totally unique and amazing.

So the witches! Right. Well, they aren’t humans. They’re witches. And they’re all women. They fly, not on broomsticks, but on some kind of twig from a bush. I don’t know. But they’re very mysterious, and awesome, and they think Lyra is “the chosen one”.

To be honest, the witches play a very small role in this series. But, I don’t know, they’re so COOL! And Serafina Pekkala is one of the few people Lyra ever really trusts, so I feel like that’s really worth something. Also, they were the only good part about the movie adaptation…

Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and is now be hosted by me (!), Katie and Adrienne at Darque Dreamer Reads. It is designed to ignite bookish discussions among readers, and was inspired by the 1961 Neil Sedaka song, Calendar Girl.

Just like the song, each month has a different theme. Each blogger picks their favorite book from the theme, and on the first Monday of the month reveals their pick in a Calendar Girls post. Make sure to post back to the hostess’s post, and I will make a master list for the month. The master lists allow everyone to see the other Calendar Girls’ picks and to pop on over to their blogs. Thus, we all get to chat about books and even make some new friends!

Check in next week for our November theme!
