Our Favorite Pick is…

With all the hype surrounding this release, and considering how many of us had it pre-ordered, I can’t say that it’s a surprise Slayer was our favorite! That being said, we were really divided this month, and most books got at least one vote. Anyway, congrats to Liz for picking the winning book, and I’ll just throw out there that it was so much fun and definitely worth the read!
Calendar Girls Book Chat
I am loving the new chat format! From January 21-25 we got together on twitter to talk about upcoming releases, what we love about them, and our habits regarding them. Adrienne and I posted one question a day, and we took the whole day to really hash out our feelings about it. I like this new format because it gives everyone a chance to participate regardless of time zones, and if you’re too busy on one day you can still jump in on a question another day!
To catch up on the chat you can follow the hashtag #CGBchat or click on the tweets below to see the whole thread.
Myself and @DarqueDreamer want to welcome you to the #CGBchat! This we are talking about our most anticipated reads of 2019. So to kick off our first question:
What do you look forward to more, the start of an exciting new series, or the continuation of a beloved series? pic.twitter.com/vnnOYp3dUL— Never Not Reading (@NNRbooks) January 21, 2019
Myself and @NNRbooks are excited about #CGBChat Day 2, and it’s a double whammy!
📚What has you most excited for your January pick, the author, or the synopsis?

Good morning! It’s day 3 of the #CGBchat! Today’s question is: Do you get more of a thrill from pre-ordering an anticipated release, or going out and buying it the day of? pic.twitter.com/vx8UAt61Gz

Happy Thursday! It’s Day 4 of the #CGBChat!! Today’s question is another double whammy:
📚How do you usually find out about books before they’re released?
📚What is your favorite way to follow upcoming releases? pic.twitter.com/hWsBCtkRK7— Darque Dreamer 📚 (@DarqueDreamer) January 24, 2019
It’s Friday and the final day of our January #CGBchat! For our final question, how soon after release do you read a new book? Do you like to read it right away, or wait and let some anticipation build? pic.twitter.com/GGtr7vnENi

Calendar Girls February

The February theme is Black History Month: Best Book by a Black Author
I’m really looking forward to seeing what we’re going to pick here! Honestly, I’m nervous because I’m not sure how to go about actually choosing. The books that come to mind are all so different from each other, choosing a favorite is like comparing apples and oranges! (Though, for the record, apples are definitely better than oranges.)
Our February schedule is:
- Monday February 4th- Calendar Girls February Posts (don’t forget to link back to me and Adrienne!)
- Sunday Feburary 10th – Voting ends for the March theme (you can still vote HERE!)
- Monday February 11th – Adrienne and I will announce the March theme
- Monday February 18th – Friday February 22nd – #CGBChat
- Monday February 25th – February Wrap-Up
Wow, I still can’t believe how many people we had participating this month! I’m so excited to see the community growing and expanding. If you’re seeing this post and thinking you might be interested in participating, PLEASE DO! We would love to have you. And this group isn’t just for girls, it’s simply the name of the song. All are welcome here. See y’all next week (eek!) with our February posts. Love y’all.

Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and is now be hosted by me (!), Katie and Adrienne at Darque Dreamer Reads. It is designed to ignite bookish discussions among readers, and was inspired by the 1961 Neil Sedaka song, Calendar Girl.
Just like the song, each month has a different theme. Each blogger picks their favorite book from the theme, and on the first Monday of the month reveals their pick in a Calendar Girls post. Make sure to post back to the hostess’s post, and I will make a master list for the month. The master lists allow everyone to see the other Calendar Girls’ picks and to pop on over to their blogs. Thus, we all get to chat about books and even make some new friends!
I am currently reading Slayer!

The theme for February is going to be tough. I’ve read so many great books by Black authors! I’ll probably do what I did for January, pick one and then do an honorable mentions/contender list.

That’s what a lot of people do every month. To me this theme is especially hard as we might be comparing books that are quite different, which is always a little awkward.

I will need to spend some time with my books this weekend so I can figure out my book pick for February.
