Soul Ripping Romance Tag

Way back around Valentines Day The Orangutan Librarian tagged me in this very simple yet obviously-I-have-to-do-it tag. If you aren’t following The Orangutan Librarian yet, you are seriously missing out and you need to go fix it NOW. That being said, you are probably going to see a lot of the same things in this tag, because we are too much alike considering we are, in fact, not even from the same species.

The Rules

  • Thank the person who tagged you and create a pingback to the original author – Nel at Reactionary Tales.
  • Share at least 5 (but more are welcome) romances that tugged your heart strings. They can be from books, movies, TV shows, manga; anything you can think of! They can be examples of sad tears, angry tears, happy tears or a combination of all three.
  • Nominate 5 (or more) people to share their emotional traumas
  • (Note: Try not to spoil the story for your readers in case they would like to check out these romances on their own)

My Favorite Romances

Ron and Hermione

My OTP. Forever. I will fight you to the death on this one, especially if you’re going to try tell me that Hermione aught to have ended up with Harry. Or if you are going to tell me that Harry Potter is horrible.

Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy

Although, if we’re being completely honest with ourselves, ANY of the Austen couples. Elizabeth and Darcy are my favorite though, probably because I relate so strongly with Elizabeth. Because what young woman doesn’t think she is Elizabeth Bennett? But also because Mr. Darcy CHANGES for her! Not like, changes who he is, but just becomes a better person. Starts being nice to people, stops snubbing people just because he can, that sort of thing.

Celia and Marco

Oh lord, the swooniest of swoony romances! If you haven’t read The Night Circus, I can’t recommend it highly enough! It’s so romantic and magical and beautiful and amazing.

Ella and Char

My original OTP from fifth grade, haha. But honestly, my heart still melts when I read Ella Enchanted in my adult years. It really holds up!

Jane and Mr. Rochester

Okay, okay, maybe not the healthiest relationship. But first of all, ALL OF THE FEELS. Second of all, I love how Jane holds her own in the relationship. Mr. Rochester tries to become all dominating-man on her, and she’s just like “I am my own person and I refused to be defined by my relationship with you.” And then STUFF happens and it turns out Mr. Rochester made a lot of questionably moral choices, and Jane loves him anyway! But not enough to make questionably moral choices herself. Gah, I love this book!

Aragorn and Arwen

Most of the wonderful things about their romance isn’t even on the page, you have to go read the Appendixes. Which, I know, super nerdy. But their story is only 3 or 4 pages long, and gives context to so many little moments in the novel! The first time I read The Lord of the Rings I just about dropped the book when Arwen swooped in right at the end, but now it’s just my favorite. Did you know that Tolkien had the names Beren and Luthien engraved on his and his wife’s tombstones? *sigh*

Eleanor and Park

Again, if I’m being honest, ALL of the Rainbow Rowell couples. I just picked Eleanor and Park because they were the first one I read. Gracious, her romances are literally magic. How does she so perfectly capture EXACTLY what first love feels like??? YA or adult, comics or novels, it doesn’t matter, I will pick up anything this woman writes.

Evelyn and ?

I can’t say any more without giving the entire book away, but trust me you want to read it and find out. You won’t see it coming, but once it happens you will be in love with their love story too. ❤

I Tag:

No pressure! I tried to tag people I haven’t tagged before (or maybe not in a while). 🙂

Who are your favorite bookish romances? Let me know in the comments!

    1. I know! On the one hand, you’ve got the “HP AND JK ROWLING ARE EVIIIIIIL” group, and on the other hand you have the “Hermione should have ended up with Harry, whine whine whine” group. Why are people so difficult? lol

  1. Thanks for the tag!!

I don’t love Mr. Rochester and Jane but I am glad that Jane ended up with Mr. Rochester… does that make sense??

Also, sobs forever about Evelyn Hugo. And Celia and Marco.

      1. I did not like how Mr. Rochester treated Jane, she is so smart and capable and he played and teased her… and then ignored her. I’m not a big fan of him. So after ALL THE THINGS HAPPENED, he learned to value her, and he now depends on her a lot more. As a result, he isn’t arrogant or dismissive or her anymore. Jane deserved a happy ending so much, so I am glad that it ended this way – I just wish Mr. Rochester had been more respectful and less mercurial.

        1. I am also a fan of how Mr. Rochester learned to appreciate all of the things that were wonderful about Jane. I was always puzzled at how he managed to fall in love with her in part as a result of her independence, then just expected her to give it up! Of course, it is purposefully done as commentary of the attitudes towards women at the time, and how women were capable of so much more than people (especially men) believed.

          1. I guess falling in love with a woman and being in a relationship with a woman tend to be different things for men. Personally I’ve met people who fell in love with and for someone’s independence and intelligence but as a girlfriend/wife expected them to change. So honestly that didn’t surprise me too much (although annoyed!) about Mr. Rochester.

I kind of wished the book had… more ghosts?? I love that Jane Eyre has a gothic atmosphere and hints of supernatural. I wished that there was more of it. What do you think?

  2. The only ship that I’ve actually read on your list was Celia and Marco, and now I’m feeling the need to binge the rest of these so I can find some fantastic ships. You made me feel all the feels when reading about them, so I can’t imagine all the feels they give regularly. Thank you so much for the tag, and wonderful post!! 🙂

      1. Ahahaha I haven’t!! Somehow, I missed it. I always tried to before the movies came out, but then I just failed since I watched the movies (it was a dark time). But yes, I’ll totally start with those first since I’ve heard so much goodness about Evelyn Hugo.

  3. Aww thank you for the lovely shoutout! (and sorry it took me so long to get to!) haha I won’t fight you on ron and hermione- I think in the book they go together well (and don’t agree she should’ve ended up with Harry) Love Elizabeth/Darcy, Jane/Mr Rochester and of course Arwen/Aragorn. I love reading the appendixes for that reason! (and a few others) I did not know that about Tolkien- that’s so lovely!!! Ahhh Evelyn and her love made me cry so much!!!
