Calendar Girls March: Book with a Favorite Mythological Creature

Hey all you book lovers out there! February is FINALLY OVER!!!! *happy dance* I heard so many people talking about how January lasted forever, but for me it was February. Tough month, man. So ready for March.

Because this month WE ARE MOVING!!!!! No more commute for me! *more happy dancing*

Guys, I’m living the dream. Being a librarian is awesome. The only thing that could make it better? Not having to wake up at 5 am anymore. Thank the lord.

This month’s Calendar Girls theme is Saint Patrick’s Day: Book with a Favorite Mythological Creature. Well, I don’t think it will be a surprise to anyone that my favorite mythological creature is dragons. Dragons, dragons, dragons! Fire dragons, water dragons, nice dragons, talking dragons, bonded-with-human dragons, realistic dragons, I love them all! So the only challenge here is picking just one book to talk about.

So I just went on Goodreads to make a list of possibilities, and I had a notification regarding a dragon book. It’s a sign.

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

This is the book that made me fall in love with Naomi Novik. No shade on Uprooted or Spinning Silver, but this remains my favorite of her books.

So His Majesty’s Dragon is set in an alternate reality Britain during the Napoleonic Wars where there’s an army, a navy, and the aviators. The aviators ride on, you guessed it, dragons. It’s such a brilliant blend of fantasy and historical fiction, and has some wonderful speculative elements. The main characters, Lawrence and Temeraire, are best friends, but aren’t “bonded” like in Pern or Eragon. I love their friendship, and Temeraire is so so sweet. Lawrence is 100% a Larry Sou, but in the best possible way. I never finished this series, because y’all know I almost never do if it’s longer than a trilogy, but the other books I did read were just as good. If you are a dragon lover and you haven’t read His Majesty’s Dragon you’ve simply got to. Naomi Novik is utterly brilliant.

Thanks to Dani and Flavia for hosting. I can’t wait to see what mythological creatures other people talk about, and I’m definitely on the lookout for leprechauns, because honestly I’ve never read a leprechaun book other than Harry Potter 4, and that hardly counts.
