I am not typically the kind to set New Year’s Resolutions. In fact, I don’t know the last time I did. My philosophy is, if I see something that needs to change I should just do it, not wait for some arbitrary date. But, as it happens, this December I’ve noticed several things about my reading life that I would like to change, but can’t bring myself to do anything about during the holidays. So January 1 (or more probably January 9, lol) seems like as good a time as any to start. 🙂
1. Read more diversely
This has actually been a resolution of mine the past two years, and I’ve been doing better. But last year, even after I made a pointed effort, still fewer than half the books I read were by authors of color. While I kept up with my stats throughout the year (which really helped), it was easy to pass blame on all the random books I was gifted, or the MG awards list not being diverse enough. This year, none of that! It’s time for fewer excuses and more results.
Goal: 50% or more books this year by authors of color
2. Read people’s blogs
This has been an on-going theme of mine for like, two years. But I am finally done with grad school, so I have a lot more time. And anyway, I read 111 books last year, “not having time” to read blog posts is just so obviously not true. I’m not making time to read blogs. So. This year, it’s FINALLY HAPPENING.
Goal: Read blogs for 15-30 minutes on weeknights after kids go to bed
3. Back to genre rotation
I abandoned my genre rotation in June or July when I realized I had been putting off books I had been long wanting to read because they didn’t fit into my rotation quite right. But now that I’m done with that list I’m just kind of reading all Sci-Fi/Fantasy with a mix of YA romance every now and then. I’m ready for something fresh!
Goal: Read books in batches of 5 -> Sci-Fi or Fantasy, other genre fiction, literary fiction or non-fiction, YA, re-read
4. Write posts other than just reviews
I did really well with this on-and-off last year, depending on how many classes I was taking mostly. But this fall I somehow fell completely off the wagon, and I haven’t written anything other than a review since October.
Goal: 4 posts a week
5. Get in on the Middle Grade ARCs????
I don’t know, this is just something I’m thinking about doing. Might not, and in fact most likely won’t.
Goal: Request a Middle Grade ARC … maybe
Best of luck with your resolutions and Happy New Year!

It’s been an ongoing refrain on my blog for like, two and a half years. Reading blogs and talking to people is the reason I started my blog in the first place. 🙂

Me too, and sharing my love of reading. I want to try and find some new blogs to follow but I feel like I’m too picky.

I feel like I just don’t have the energy to find new bloggers, haha. I like when people posts favorite/new blogger posts, I’ll usually insta-follow whoever those people are.

Looks like some good goals! Years ago, I read only mysteries and decided that only every other book could be in that genre. It worked for me!

I used to do that with re-reads and/or classics, the every other thing. 🙂
