The Renegades’ worst enemy is back among them, threatening to reclaim Gatlon City. Nova and Adrian must brave lies and betrayal to protect those they love. Their greatest fears are about to come to life, and unless they can bridge the divide between heroes and villains, they stand to lose everything. Including each other.

Intrigue and action will leave readers on edge until the final, shocking secrets are revealed.

Supernova definitely improved from the second-book-slump of Arch-Enemies but didn’t quite manage to live up to the series opener of Renegades. Meyer’s writing is engrossing and entertaining, but residual plot problems from the second book prevented this one from knocking it out of the park.

In Renegades, Nova and Adrian (aka Insomnia and Sketch) fought the battle of their lives against the Anarchist known as the Detonator. It was a short-lived victory.

The Anarchists still have a secret weapon, one that Nova believes will protect her. The Renegades also have a strategy for overpowering the Anarchists, but both Nova and Adrian understand that it could mean the end of Gatlon City – and the world – as they know it.

This series was intended to be two-books long, but somewhere between publishing book 1 and 2 Meyer decided it would be a trilogy. That was the greatest weakness of Archenemies. Renegades ended building very clearly toward the finale, and the change of direction into a sequel was abrupt and cheapened the end of book 1. The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies—humans with extraordinary abilities—who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

They told me Marissa Meyer was a genius at world-building, and it wasn’t that I didn’t believe them, I guess I just didn’t get it. HO-LY COW. This world was completely real to me. I was so convinced, there was so much detail, just wow. Only occasionally did the extra-super-hero-y names and words kind of jump out and jolt me into remember that this book is, in fact, pretend. Words like “chromium”, “Galton City”, stuff like that. I don’t know, it was a little cheesy. Perfect for a super hero novel. But I loved how easy it was to get absorbed into the world and the characters and the story.
