5 “Bad” Books I Actually Really Like

I’m going to start by saying I don’t know that there is such a thing as a “bad” book. While definitely some books are better than others, and for sure the writing in some books is just terrible, I don’t know that a book can be “bad”.

Okay, I take it back, there are some books that are DEFINITELY bad in every way.

But I don’t think you have to only like things that are “good.” I mean, for one thing, good/bad is so subjective! But for another thing, your enjoyment of a thing isn’t necessarily tied to its quality. I have definitely experienced movies/TV that are so bad I can’t enjoy it, but most of the time I can like something even when I can tell it’s not awesome if it’s achieving whatever it set out to do. This book was supposed to make me laugh, and it did. Yay!

Okay, glad I got that out of the way.

This list are books that the book community on the whole has determined are terrible, and that I to some extent agree are not awesome, but I still love them anyway.

1. Twilight

I resisted Twilight for a LONG time. By the time the movie came out literally everyone I knew had read it except for me, and then I saw the movie which was terrible, and so I refused to read it. Until I did. And yes, it was just as bad as everyone says. The dialogue is particularly awful. But … I have still read the whole series. More than once.

I don’t know what it is that makes me keep reading. It’s not the romance. Maybe it’s the melodrama? It’s definitely at least part the Pacific Northwest setting. Whatever it is, so many people enjoy this book that I’m done criticizing it or apologizing for liking it.

The Beatles Book Tag

My friend and very favorite blogger, The Orangutan Librarian, recently created The Beatles Book Tag. Little known fact, The Beatles are my all-time favorite band, and my favorite song in the whole world and all styles of music is a Beatles song. So I was so excited to get tagged and would have tagged myself if she didn’t. *smiles*

Rules:

  1. Tag back to the original creator Orang-utan Librarian (me)
  2. Thank whoever tagged you
  3. Tag people and keep it going!

Love Me Do

A book with a character you wish would love you

It’s pretty hard to go wrong with The Orangutan Librarian’s original answer, Mr. Knightly. I would also be okay if Faramir came knocking on my door.

Identity Crisis Tag

Hm, I haven’t had a good identity crisis yet in 2020. Will finding out I’m not really the book character I’ve always identified with do me in? Let’s find out!

I was tagged in the Identity Crisis Tag by my very favorite blogger The Orangutan Librarian LAST SEPTEMBER. EEK! I don’t know how I didn’t do this tag sooner because a) I love personality quizzes and b) I’ve probably done a bunch of tags since then. What can I say? I’m a terrible friend. 😛

Anyway, I’m very much looking forward to seeing which character from some favorite series I am, though I admit I haven’t read most of them. LET’S GO!

Rules

  1. Take all the quizzes down below and record your answers.
  2. NO CHEATING. You get one shot to take each quiz.

Red Queen

I have never read this book/series, nor do I even know what it’s about! So this should go right over my head. WOO!

I am: Cal

Whoever that is. While I’m not sure whether I should be offended, I’m a little confused by the “strong and broody” description. Nor do I typically struggle to figure out what the right thing to do is… *shrug*

90s Movie Tag

I saw this tag oh so many months ago on The Bibliphagist, and I just looooooove 90s movies so much that I bookmarked it for a rainy day. And since I’m feeling like a tag this evening, here we go!

She’s All That

giphy

An odd pairing, but they still fit perfectly

26042767I mean, like, every couple in The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet! It’s kind of the point of the book, that it explores how relationships might become more complex if we discover more life out there, and how that will re-define what we think of as a weird relationship. Like, how do inter-species couplings work? What about how different planets have different ways of thinking about family and relationships? Can you have a relationship with a computer? It’s all so BRILLIANT, but it’s also touching and relatable, and GAH! Read it! Continue reading “90s Movie Tag”

Six Degrees of Separation: Where am I Now? to The Odyssey

6 degrees

Six Degrees of Separation is a monthly blog event hosted by Kate at booksaremyfavoriteandbest. It’s inspired by the 6 Degrees of Separation, a movie game where you attempt to connect actors in six movies or less. But we do it with books!

This month we’re starting with Where am I Now? by Mara Wilson.

I’ve not read Where am I Now?, but the author, Mara Wilson, starred in the film adaptation of the classic novel Matilda. An actor memoir I have read is… Continue reading “Six Degrees of Separation: Where am I Now? to The Odyssey”

The Literary Dinner Party Tag

If you could invite one book character to dinner, who would it be?

SCREW THAT! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO PICK JUST ONE?!?!?!?!

tumblr_ljy3elsgC41qbpnjto1_500

Luckily for me (and all of my dinner plates…) I saw this awesome tag on Kristin Kraves Books that lets me pick more than one person. Yay! It was created by NEHOMAS2 over on BookTube, so go on over and show those ladies some love.

So, who will be at my dinner party? I can’t wait to find out!

A Character Who Cooks or Likes to Cook

I feel like between her actual cooking skills and her much improved magic, Agnieszka could make us something very delicious. And maybe as long as she’s here make me some nicer clothes. And then perhaps we could be gal pals. Continue reading “The Literary Dinner Party Tag”

Mulan Book Tag

Hey guys! It’s Sunday, so I’m back with another tag! Still trying to catch up on these after last semester being crazy busy. Thanks to Anatomy of a Book Thief for tagging me in this one! I absolutely love Disney movies, and I actually showed this one to my class at our last day of school party!

All right-y-roo! Here we go!

Reflection – An Inaccurate book cover that doesn’t reflect what the book is about

All right, I’m going to come out and say it. I’ve always thought the Twilight covers are super dumb. Like, I get that they’re supposed to be metaphoric or something, but it’s a YA romance about VAMPIRES. Why do the covers need to be metaphoric? But I have to say, they’ve become so freaking iconic that there has never been a re-design. Ever. Even Harry Potter’s had like, three now. I mean, I think they’re stupid, but obviously they work. Unforgettable Bookish Memories Tag

I was tagged in this a bajillion years ago by The Orangutan Librarian. If you have somehow never been over there, go today. She’s the BEST. Seriously.

No. 1: The First Book You Ever Read (or was read to you)

51hXWiuxGYLGood grief, I don’t know. Probably something by Sandra Boynton. Ever since my son was born my mom has been obsessing about Moo Baa LaLaLa, so I guess she read that to me? Continue reading “Unforgettable Bookish Memories Tag”

The Book Blogger Test Tag

Thanks to the coffeeloving bookoholic for tagging me in this one! As you all know, I am always up for a good book tag. Especially since I am FINALLY running out of backlogged reviews, and need something to talk about. lol

The Rules

  • thank the person who nominated you and add a link to their blog
  • answer the ten questions asked on this post
  • nominate at least five people to do it also

1. Top 3 Book Pet Hates

  1. It really bugs me why my editions of a series don’t match. Even hard/soft back. And don’t even get me started when they change the look of a series halfway through. Just no.
  2. I hate when books try too hard. Honestly, I just want to be entertained. I don’t need all of your pretentious attempts at being Dickens, thanks.
  3. Movie poster covers. Enough said.

The College Freshman Book Tag

Created by Little Blind Book Finds. View the original post here.

It’s been ten entire years since I was a freshman in college. Wow. It doesn’t feel like it. I’m not very good at this adulting thing… Anyway, but because I am a teacher and my husband works at a university, I don’t feel all that removed from the college experience, so this book tag really caught my attention. This should be fun!

Rules:

  1. Give credit to the creator. (That’s Little Blind Book Finds, y’all.)
  2. Answer the questions to the best of your ability! You don’t have to be in college or have gone to college to answer these!
  3. Tag three people to complete the tag.

The Roommate

Roommates can be a hit or miss experience freshman year, especially when you don’t get the opportunity to pick who you room with. Name a character you’d love to be roommates with and one you’d hate to be roommates with.

downloadThere are two book characters that I would have loved being roommates with in college. The first is Cath from Fangirl. Cath would be a great roommate because she is low-key, preferring to stay in rather than going out all hours of the night (just like me!), and low maintenance. She would be there to hang out with on a Friday night when everyone else was out partying, but if I needed some space she wouldn’t be desperate for my company. Plus, if we can just pretend Simon Snow is Harry Potter, than we could have been the biggest fangirls of all time together. I don’t know anyone else who loves Harry Potter like I do! The other character who would be a great roommate is Sam Gamgee from The Lord of the Rings. If he took care of me the way he took care of Frodo, I would call myself one lucky hobbit.

I would absolutely never ever want to be roommates with Draco Malfoy. He’s a jerk, he’s a racist, and I would get tired of hearing him talk about himself all the time. And even though his mom was always sending him sweets, I bet he never shared. Continue reading “The College Freshman Book Tag”
