Calendar Girls October: Book That Lit Your Way Out of a Reading Slump

OCTOBER IS HERE!!!!!!

Guys, I love October. It’s the best month of the year. ❤ If only our weather here in Texas would actually start to resemble October weather… But I’m not here to complain. October is October. Bring on the sweaters and boots!

Our theme this month is a book that lit your way out of a reading slump. I have to come clean with you all, I’ve never experienced the dreaded reading slump. That’s right, you heard me. No, I’m not showing off or bragging, it’s just the truth. I’ve read a book every single day since … 4th grade? Before? Maybe I missed a day or two if I was sick or something, but I’ve never felt like “Bleh, I just don’t want to read anything!”

So I decided to take this prompt from a different direction. While I wouldn’t call it a reading slump, in the 2016/2017 school year I was in a bit of a … rut. I was reading the same books over and over again, it had been a long time since I’d found something new to read that I actually liked. Then, suddenly, MAGIC. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

What was so special about Fangirl? I couldn’t stop thinking about it, I couldn’t stop talking about it (even though I had no one to talk to…). Goodreads wasn’t enough. I wanted to talk about this book so badly that I started a BLOG. Why?

Some of it, I think, was that Rainbow Rowell’s books were the first actually good YA books I’d ever read aside from The Hunger Games. I’d made jaunts into the genre, and almost always came away disappointed. I had a few favorite Middle-Grade novels and series, but YA just seemed bleh to me. But Fangirl was just so shockingly GOOD.

Also, it seemed like it was written just for me. Cath and I have so much in common (by which I mean the college version of myself), and so many shared interests. I related strongly with her story, and it felt so good to see myself and my troubles reflected in something I was reading.

Finally, Rainbow Rowell’s books just have that *something* for me. Everybody has an author whose writing style they just connect with, and for me that’s Rainbow. It just feels like magic. Like the people she’s writing about are real. I feel all the feelings. I don’t really know how to describe it. We’re just MFEO.

So, yeah. I loved this book so much I started this blog to talk about it. And then I fell in love with books all over again. I started finding (thanks to y’all!) so many more books to love. I don’t just re-read my favorite classics anymore. So, thanks guys. I love you.
