Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Because if you know me, you know that I have lots of unpopular opinions, and I really enjoy sharing them. Especially when I’m right. 😛

Saw this one on thebookcorps and I couldn’t resist tagging myself. Because I can never get enough of unpopular opinions. Also, I agreed with every single one of hers, so they can’t be THAT unpopular! Check out Laura and her blog, always a good read.

A Popular Book or Book Series You Didn’t Like

mortal-instrument-books

Guys, I don’t like The Mortal Instruments. They’re stupid, and childish, and not even particularly well-written. Which is too bad, really, because I can usually get behind anything that involves the slaying of evil creatures. Also, I couldn’t get past how much I hated all the characters’ names.

Also, Game of Thrones. It’s like a huge soap opera, but instead of cheating on each other they’re all stabbing each other in the back (literally), and instead of hospitals there’s war zones. It is in every other way unidentifiable from a soap opera drama. Sorry, not sorry.

I could keep going, I dislike I lot of popular series, but I’ll leave it here. For now. (This could be a fun Top 10 post…)

A Popular Book or Book Series That Everyone Else Seems to Hate but You Love

Um?

1656001

I know everyone totally hates Stephanie Meyer (or hero worships her), and by the time The Host came out opinions were basically already formed. And honestly, I don’t really like her books either. But I am personally so intrigued by “they walk among us” books, movies, TV shows, everything, that I really like this book anyway.

An OTP That You Don’t Like

People who ship Snape and Lily make me want to punch their lights out. You realize that Snape was a friggin DEATH EATER, right? That would be like a black person falling in love with a member of the KKK. You just can’t get past hatred for your own people like that, and even if you could, what kind of hypocrite hates black people in general but loves a black person? Just, no. Canon all the way.

A Popular Book Genre that You Hardly Reach For

I will never read a romance novel. It’s just not my thing. And I will double never read erotica.

A Popular/Beloved Character That You Do Not Like

Already used Snape… damn…

I didn’t like Lila in A Darker Shade of Magic. I know people are like, in love with her, but I found her immature and a little annoying. To be fair, I haven’t finished the series yet, maybe she gets better.

A Popular Author That You Can’t Seem to Get Into

TOG-NYT-Cover

I just do NOT see the big deal with Sarah J. Maas. Her books weren’t even very good to begin with, and they’ve basically degenerated into an episode of One Tree Hill with swords and magic. And a lot more sex. Why does everyone love her so much?

A Popular Book Trope That You’re Tired of Seeing

425.stewart.pattinson.twilight.050409

“Monsters” that are lovable is getting old. Twilight was put-up-able-with, since it was the first one, but then an entire genre appeared out of it, and it’s not original or fun anymore. Especially because of the message it sends to girls. If your guy is controlling or angry or semi-abusive, it’s not his fault! It’s just the way he is! You can get past it together. No. Girls, if you’re in a relationship like that, he is NOT going to change, and it is NOT okay just because he loves you. Get out.

A Popular Series that You Have No Interest in Reading

maze-runner-books

So, so many of them. (This sounds like another one that could be a whole Top 10 post on its own…) But I always feel like I have to justify my lack of interest in The Maze Runner, especially to other teachers, so I’m going with that.

I just heard/read some negative review of The Maze Runner from a couple of people who like the same kinds of books as me, and whose opinion on quality I REALLY trust. Also, it seems to be so clearly trying to piggy back off The Hunger Games’ hype. I’d rather read something more original, but that’s just me.

The Saying Goes “The book is always better than the movie,” but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

There’s a couple of obvious ones, but I’m going to mention two. And I want it to be clear that in both cases I really liked the book.

The Princess Bride is just one of the best movies of all time. Period. Even though the book is so great, what they did with the movie was somehow even better. Seriously, what movie do people quote MORE than The Princess Bride?

I watched the movie Stardust before I read the book, which is probably why I liked it better. I honestly didn’t even know it was a book until I’d been in love with the movie for a solid six years. I just felt like the ending was more exciting, and I loved Robert di Nero’s character, who was created for the movie.

I hope everyone is thoroughly offended. Please feel free to bash me and my opinions shamelessly in the comments, though I would request you NOT do so on Twitter. :*

I’m tagging a few friends who I know often have unpopular opinions. As usual, you do not HAVE to participate. *cough* Melanie *cough* A tag is more of an appreciation of your unique opinion than a demand of post.

    1. Like, it’s fine to think they’re fun I guess, but I just don’t understand this “I have to read anything she writes the second it comes out” thing. It’s not like it was Harry Potter or something…

  1. I’ve always loved reading people’s answers for this tag! I get why you didn’t like Mortal Instruments for sure- it’s always been a guilty pleasure of mine, and now that there are so many spin off books and series it’s not even pleasure anymore :/ hehe I’d love to see your top ten for popular series you don’t like!! I actually really like the Host- and even think Twilight could have been fine (like 3*) had it been a standalone- sparkly vamps and all 😉 (okay maybe not the sparkly vamps, that part’s just ridiculous) hahahahaha you are so right about Snape and Lily- no!! That can’t be a thing!! Lila wasn’t my favourite character either (shh don’t tell!) I mean, I did like her- but like you said a lot of people seem to be in love with her and I don’t get that. TOG is also guilty pleasure material- but for that one I just really like the characters (though Maas cannot write sex scenes and needs to *for the love of all that’s holy* stop!!) Agree with you about the monster thing! Yeahhh I’m not reading Maze runner and feel no guilt- to be honest, I heard what the idea was somewhere and just thought it was too dumb to waste my time with. YAY PRINCESS BRIDE!!! I love that film!! And I did the same with Stardust- but I can’t feel bad cos that movie is just wonderful (including Robert De Niro’s character!!) Loved your answers for this! Thanks so much for the tag- I did this a while ago, but would be happy to do it again if I come up with more offensive opinions 😉

  2. Totally agree with your stance on the Mortal Instruments. I read the first book and I was done after that. The language that Clare uses is pretentious and not a single one of her characters are likeable. Also, I was into Maas for a time, but she has been adding too much porn to her books lately for me to like her anymore.

  3. Thanks for the shoutout!! I agree with most of your opinions (except for TMI, that’s my favourite series ever *sobs*)
Honestly, you’re not missing out by not reading SJM’s books. I used to love her, but now her books have evolved into smut and confusing plot. I’m so so so over her.
I haven’t finished A Darker Shade series either, but I also don’t really like Lila. I don’t know what it is about her, but she annoys me for some reason. Still want to read the books, so hopefully she gets better
    Great post!! 😀

  4. I’m not like a super fan of the Shadowhunter books, but I will say that the writing has improved significantly as the multiple series have progressed.

And I still need to finish A Conjuring of Light, but I feel like Lila gets better in the second book.

Oh, and also a person who dislikes Twilight, but actually enjoyed The Host (though, having been obsessed with the Animorphs series as a kid, it did feel pretty much like something I’ve read before). I will admit to still being severely pissed off that she never completed the trilogy. After The Host was supposed to be The Seeker and The Soul, but in some interviews and such Meyer said that she was having issues with getting into writing the next one because she would be needing to kill off characters. I think that is a crap reason to not finish.

      1. To this day I still own every single Animorphs book. I just can’t get rid of them. While I liked reading Babysitters Club and Boxcar Children and Nancy Drew and such, my first real book fandom obsession was Animorphs.

    1. I WANTED to like the Mortal Instruments. I enjoyed the first book. But it kind of went downhill from there for me. I made it through the fifth book before I gave up. I felt like the longer the series went on the more it became about teen romance, and the less it became about killing monsters and stopping evil things. Also, I really really hated basically every name in the book. Every. Single. One.

  5. I also could not get into The Mortal Instruments series. I skim-read a lot of City of Bones and was totally put off by the faux incest that happens through the series. You’re totally right about Snape and Lily, he’s a complex character for sure and I do think he redeems himself by the end, but I don’t really ship them (also, from what we’ve seen, James Potter was a bit of an arse too!). Agreed about Stardust! I absolutely loved the film and then years later read the book and felt it didn’t capture the same feeling I had. This tag is brilliant! 🙂
