Harry Potter Week Day 7: Thank You

Happy Anniversary Harry!

Today the Harry Potter series turns 21. Here in the US it’s the big 2-0. Wow, 20 years! I can’t believe it! That’s like, two-thirds of my life. To celebrate, Weird Zeal has hosted a week-long Potter event, which so many of you have been reading, liking, and commenting on. Thanks guys! But today is special. Today we say thank you.

I want to say thank you to all of the fans. To all of the Potterheads who have created such an amazing community, both on the internet and in real life.ย

In the last twenty years I’ve had the chance to meet a lot of Harry Potter fans of all ages. In my experience they are the kindest, coolest folks out there. Thanks to Harry I’ve made genuine connections with people I certainly never would have met otherwise. People from all over the world. We’ve been there to support each other, to fangirl together, and just to share the experience of Harry Potter together.

There’s something about a fandom that makes a book so much more special. I remember back in 2001, when my family first got broadband internet, going onto MuggleNet and just getting SUCKED. IN. I read fan theories, printed proof sheets for Ron/Hermione coupling, played games, even ventured into *gasp* chat rooms. It made waiting for the fifth book so much more exciting!

Later, in 2012, I joined the Pottermore community. While the website itself was admittedly pretty lame, I got sucked in to the game and the community. Unable to chat effectively on the website, we took to twitter and facebook, creating accounts for the sole purpose of talking to other Pottermore players. What other fandom even DOES that?

This is such a great community, and I feel so thankful to have met you all and geeked out with you. Potterheads have definitely helped me to become the person I am today, and I am so thankful to each and every one of you. Thank you for being accepting, caring, kind, and most of all, nerdy. Y’all are amazing. I love you.

  1. This was so sweet! I don’t think I realized it at the time, but Harry Potter brought me one of my best friends for life when I was in elementary school. I had been bullied a lot in like 3rd/4th grade and one day my mom was like “I’m going to set you up on a play date with some girl so you can make new friends who are nicer!” and she sent me off to this girl’s house for the day. She was super nice and we had other stuff in common, but honestly, I don’t know that the friendship would have stuck like it has if it weren’t for the fact that we were both totally Harry-obsessed. To this day, when we’re living halfway across the world from one another, a good portion of our daily communication comes from tagging each other in HP memes on Instagram or sending each other screenshots of tumblr headcanons

That said, the online community I’ve found of Potterheads has been equally wonderful. On almost any website I’ve been on (here, bookstagram, NaNoWriMo, whatever else) bonding with some over Harry Potter is a sure way to make a great internet-friend.
