I’m not a huge planner. In the past the things that I’ve planned have always seemed to … not work out. You can plan and plan and plan, but inevitably something doesn’t go the way you thought it would, and you have to re-do EVERYTHING. So I’ve sort of stopped planning. I keep ’em vague.
I DO like goals. That’s different. But let’s not go into that, lol.
All this to say, I don’t really have a plan for this blog going into 2018. I’m just going to do what I did this year: do whatever I want and see which direction it goes.
But there are a couple of things that are solid and (probably) going to happen, so let’s take a look at those.
Goodreads Challenge
Setting my goal for 30 books. This is a lot less than 2017, but there’s a few good reasons.
- Giving birth and maternity leave. I’m trying to be realistic here.
- As you’ll read below, there’s a couple of behemoths on my list. Like, 800 pagers. They’ll slow me down quite a bit.
- I can always bump it up, but not down. I mean, you can, but how would you live with yourself?
*Side note* I love how goodreads is like, “You’re on track!” even though I’ve read 0 books. Bless January 1st, lol.
Books on my Bookshelf that Need to Get Read
These are mostly Christmas presents, with a giveaway win and a couple that are just OLD and need to get read.
Caraval
This was won in a Goodreads Giveaway. I put it on my tbr back before everyone read it and it was still all hype, but a lot of people were disappointed. I’m not holding my hopes too high.
11/22/63
I’ve never read a Stephen King book before, and I’m really looking forward to this as a great first go! However, I didn’t realize when I asked for it that it’s so LONG! I’m a little nervous. I’ll probably save it for summer vacation…
The Wrath & the Dawn
Sooooo excited about this one! I love the Scheherazade story, and I’ve heard great things about this re-telling.
Wolf Hall
I’m a sucker for the Tudors. I have read so many Tudor novels, you guys can’t even understand. I’ve put this one off for a long time because I’m nervous that too much graphic sex content could ruin it for me. Just, seriously, you don’t need too much if it’s not erotica. Anyway, nobody else I knew who read it would ever really give me a straight answer about that, so I put it off. But I got it for Christmas, so…
My Ántonia
I’ve had this book for like, 6 years or something. I love the Classics, I love Little House on the Prairie, it seems like a no-brainer. I just keep forgetting about it.
The Goldfinch
My mom sent me this book in the mail right at the end of summer vacation, and I didn’t want to start it going into a new school year. My plan was to read it summer vacation 2018. Then I got 11/22/63, which I am much more excited to read. We’ll see what happens.
Books I Don’t Own but REALLY Want to Read
Spinning Silver
NAOMI NOVIK IS COMING OUT WITH A NEW BOOK!!!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Ship of the Dead
I thought I was going to be able to buy this on Google Play with these free credits I earn (read more here), but it’s a LOT more expensive than Riordan’s books have been in the past. So it may be time to bite the bullet and get on the library’s wait list.
Sisterhood Everlasting
This book’s been on my tbr for a long time, and I actually did a re-read of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants last year. But I just … wasn’t sure. After a glowing recommendation from The Orangutan Librarian, it got moved to the top of the list.
Geekerella
What can I say, this just sounds right up my ally, but there was so much YA that seemed more pressing in 2017. I can’t wait to read it.
Upcoming Events
Favorites February
I love re-reading books, so this is a thing I’m thinking about starting this year. (Keep your eyes open for a post about it, I need feedback to decide what exactly to do.)
Featuring Percy Jackson and the Olympians. You guys, I am so stoked. I’ve been wanting to re-read these since my mother-in-law gave me a boxed set for Christmas two or three years ago, and I just have been re-reading other things. Seriously, I am so excited I’m giddy!
YA Series Summer
I always read an old-ish YA series that I never got around to. This year I’ll be reading Shadow and Bone and it’s sequels. Not the spin-offs. Aint nobody got time for that!
Leaky Con
LEAKY CON IS COMING TO DALLAS!!!!! I can’t wait. I don’t know what all this will entail for my blog yet, but you can bet there’ll be at least one post about that.
I loved Uprooted! I can’t wait for Spinning Silver! As far as I can tell they are not related but the covers are pretty similar.

I’m slightly bothered by how similar the covers are, especially since they don’t seem to be set in the same “universe” or whatever. I’m so excited though!

AHH, PERCY JACKSON. I hope you laugh a ton when you reread the series!

11.22.63 is on my list too. My husband and I started the miniseries on Hulu and it’s really good. And Geekerella was really good 🙂

I didn’t know there was a mini-series. Might be fun to watch with my husband when I’m done reading. 🙂

hehe that’s hilarious that Goodreads tells you you’re on track 😉 I’ll be interested to see your thoughts on Caraval (I was one of the people disappointed with it unfortunately- it’s not a terrible book though and I hope you like it more) I still need to get to Wrath of the Dawn and Wolf Hall. And I’m glad you’ve pushed Sisterhood Everlasting up your list 😀 It’s different from the other books in the series, but I thought it was really well done. Awesome post!

Thanks! Yeah, my hopes for Caraval aren’t high, but I figured as long as I won it in a giveaway I may as well read it, right? Haha

You’re welcome! haha absolutely!

I still need to set my book goal too! I love you’re breakdown here, so fun to read! Also, i haven’t read caraval either! it keeps coming in from my library on ebook and then i read the synopsis and can never decide if it’s worth the time!

I probably wouldn’t be reading it if I hadn’t won a free copy. A lot of people were super disappointed. But I figure as long as I have it I might as well give it a chance!

Looks like you have some great plans! And a baby… yes, very wise to be realistic about how much time you’ll have. I wish you all the best with a newborn–may your baby eat plenty, sleep more, and laugh when it isn’t doing either of those.

Thanks! I certainly hope he eats and sleeps better than the last one did!

Our second time around has been easier in those aspects. But then there’s also two kids in the house, so…. Yeah. 🙂

I keep telling me husband that no matter how difficult having 2 kids is, there’s no way it’s as difficult as having a toddler and a mommy who literally can’t even bend over. lol

Haha, true! If you can’t bend over, I’m assuming that baby’s coming soonish. Hope it all goes smoothly!

Thanks! I’ve actually got a while to go, I just got huge and tired pretty quickly this time around, haha.

I also haven’t read the new Magnus Chase book but I plan too, sometimes. So many books, so little time to read them. 😦 Putting it on my list for this year, hopefully, we’ll get to it this year! Good post! Congrats on the baby!

I know! I don’t know how some people read 200 a year! And thank you. 🙂

I also just bought Wolf Hall last month, the Tudors are so damn intriguing. I did read the first page and the language is pretty difficult so you may be in for a tough ride.
The Goldfinch is amazing, one of the few books I gave 5*’s. I couldn’t put it down. It’s slow but slow good because there’s a lot of philosophy and a sense of tragedy from start to finish. I think you might enjoy it! 🙂

I know, I can’t get enough of the Tudors! Its like a soap opera, but it’s REAL, which is even more ludicrous.
Yeah, I’m worried about pacing on The Goldfinch. If it’s slow AND long, I might have a tough time, lol. That’s why I’m saving it for summer. Excited to hear it’s so good though!

I didn’t know about Spinning Silver, but it’s on my TBR now.
It sounds like you have a pretty busy 2018 planned.
